Dear Local 747 Brothers and Sisters:

Since the imposition of an emergency trustee in April of 2009, a considerable amount of time and effort has been expended to address the situation that resulted in the trusteeship. Those efforts resulted in the removal of the Local President, several officers, employees and Business Agents for cause. While the results of the hearing board are concluded, it remains a possibility that some of those individuals may face other charges in the judicial system.

Our focus has been on repairing the representation process for all members of Local 747. This has included a review of all properties and the implementation of improved processes to give you the representation you have the right to expect and receive.

As we have continued this evolution, one thing has become crystal clear. The financial policies put in place by the former President and approved by his Board have put an impossible financial strain on Local 747. Membership dues which should have been used to provide services were diverted to the President, with his Board’s approval. These additional and unwarranted fees and consulting agreements drained the finances of the Local to the point that it has become necessary in the recent weeks to look at how best to continue to provide you with improved services.

After consultation with the International, a determination has been made to administratively combine the forces of Local 747 with Local 1224. What this means is that while your level of representation will improve, we will be able to share the administrative costs of staff, legal and other services with Local 1224.

There are many questions about how this will affect you. First and foremost, you will continue to receive representation with no change in your Business Agent, unless you request it. Communications will be improving across the board as we unveil the new Local 747 website in the coming days. It will be much more user friendly and will continue to provide you the same services as before. The biggest change will be that for the first time, you will have the ability to communicate with crewmembers of other carriers. We will also have other improvements rolled out as time progresses. Our current website will remain operational until the new site is ready. As soon as the new site is up, we will notify you. In the meantime, I urge you to visit the Local 747 website at:  www.ibt747.org, and check it frequently for messages and updates.

While we will be sharing a building with Local 1224, we will remain a separate Local. Our interface will only be in the sharing of staff and resources to contain costs, benefitting both our Local and Local 1224. Should you need to contact the Local by phone, you can still use 800-747-2313, or you may use 937-383-1354. The new email for the Local is:  local747@apa1224.org

In closing, it is said that change is inevitable. While that may be true, in this case it is an imperative driven by the actions of a small group who forgot that their responsibility was to you, the members who elected them and paid their salaries. They assumed they were entitled to benefits at your expense. This has changed for the better since it has been the policy of Airline Division Director David Bourne that membership representation and integrity will be the priority of the Division and the Locals within it. He will accept no less and as your Trustee, neither will I.

Fraternally,

/s/
Scott Hegland
